I have so much going on in my life, have been working very hard, and have so much to be grateful for. Yet, I started to feel like something was missing. Have you ever felt like that?
Always make some time not for yourself, but with yourself
I knew April would be busy. I had several expos to attend and a few speaking engagements. I also teach a class for kids, and needed to set time aside to plan for the workshop in May. Naturally, all of this includes managing a growing business and working with dozens of great clients.
Add to all this "stuff" that I do (which I am grateful for), I started to cutting out a few things here and there. The 30-minute workout at the gym, for example, just until things settle down. The journal I keep seemed easy to let slip for a few days. The book I am reading will be there in a few weeks. Even church was something I was considering optional, given I could use the little extra sleep.
When you start feeling sad, it's because you are sacrificing too much of what fills you up.
So I asked myself, "What would Dr. John Demartini do?" I picked up "Count Your Blessings" and took a look inside. The chapter — The clearer your ultimate purpose, the more effectively you'll fulfill it. — quickly inspired me. You see, when I read this chapter again, it reminded me to listen to me inner voice.
We all have it, you know. There is an inner voice that tells us to fulfill our purpose. We when listen, it's much easier to experience a new level of gratitude, unconditional love, and a greater level of health.
Do you know what my inner voice told me? Fulfilling our purpose is done moment by moment. That means: a few minutes ago, a few minute from now, and right now. I know it might sound odd to some people, but it's true. Your inner voice is asking you to fulfill your purpose for that moment, every moment of the day.
Sometimes it may seem difficult to do, especially when life pulls you in different directions. It doesn't matter what they are really: if you have kids, if you a demanding job, or if you any number of other issues that seem to pop up. It all counts.
So, the other day, I woke up a little earlier to start my day with a workout, well before taking my 8-year-old daughter to school. Of course, when my daughter knew I was up early, she wanted some time to talk and hang out before school. This time, I decided to listen to my inner voice. We would still have time to talk on the way to school. I really needed my workout.
My point is that I needed to fulfill my purpose in that moment for me. Good thing too. Instead of thinking about how I was missing my workout, I was more focused after my workout and we had one of the best talks ever. Later that day, she took her teacher up on an opportunity to do her homework in class, giving us additional family time when she got home.
One by one, my passions returned as quickly as they had left. My purpose in morning requires writing in my journal and working out. My purpose requires me to read at night and always get to attend church. It wasn't long after that I began to feel more love, more gratitude, and more healthy despite having just as much to do.
Having those moments also makes me a better person, wife, mother, consultant, and friend because the quality of the time is just as important as the quantity of time. It's a good lesson and I hope it helps you as summer speeds up our schedules. It's not as difficult as you think. Just listen to what the inner voice is telling you.
Mine telling me to wish you peace, love, and joy in your life! What is yours telling you? Right then, go do it!
